Travel Day to Butare

Today was another great day in Rwanda. The day started off as many will for us at the hospital doing cases. Both Faye and I had difficult cases this morning. I was involved in a case of an 80 yo F for a craniotomy, which would be a tough case in the US. Faye had her own experience with a very cute 11 month old child for a GI surgery. Both cases were great learning experiences for the residents as well as for us. We are both becoming more comfortable with the hospital and as our comfort level improves, we are able to teach more and help identify areas of need.
After a morning of anesthesia, we then had to drive to Butare, where we will be teaching at the local hospital on thursday and friday. Our driver, Joseph, was amazing and one of the nicest people we have met since being here. It took us about 3 hours to get to Butare including a stop to eat lunch. I truly enjoyed the drive. As I had only been in Kigali, the capital, I had not seen the more rural side of Rwanda. I loved seeing the small towns along the way as well as the vast amounts of agriculture in the area. So many children and all of them are so happy to see you.

Because we arrived in the early afternoon, we were able to walk around Butare. It is a town with one main paved road with all of the other dirt roads leading into the one paved road. Needless to say the main road is quite busy and has all of the main shops and restaurants. We both did a little shopping. The last part of our tourist trip involved walking down one of the roads. Both of the pictures are from that trip. The first picture is of a great Catholic church that is located on this road. It is actually the largest Cathedral in Rwanda. The second is of Faye with some of the children along the way. All the children want to talk to you and want to practice their English with you. Overall, today was a great day and I look forward to getting back in the OR tomorrow.
